Skeletal reconstructions (formally known as “skeletals”) are a synthetic graphic representation of the skeletal system of a species, whether extinct or extant.
The style, pose, and other characteristics of the skeletal are human-based, combining both zoological/paleontological/anatomical knowledge and artistic style.
Skeletals are therefore original works created by hand by the artist. For this reason, it is necessary to cite and mention the author of the skeletal when it is shown online, in printed products (books, magazines, etc.) or if it is used as a reference/basis for illustrations or 3D figures.
For-profit:
Skeletals can be part of for-profit projects or can be used as a basis for products and/or illustrations intended for sale (such as commissions or physical works).
In this case, it is mandatory to contact the author to obtain permission to use the work and decide on any compensation (if necessary) for its use in your product or project.
Non-profit:
Even if the use of the skeletal is non-profit, it is always necessary to contact the author to request permission to use the work.
Journals (academic & scientific papers) and academic theses:
The use in a scientific journal (or similar) of a skeletal already created by the author in the past always requires a request made by the author or co-author of the article to the author of the artwork.
*Use is almost always free of charge, while the creation of unpublished and custom artwork most often requires payment to the author agreed between the two parties.
Books:
Reproducing a skeleton in a book requires compliance with the rules mentioned above. If the work was found online in archives such as Wikipedia, and it is the author's original work and is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0, then it is mandatory to comply with Creative Commons regulations of the CC BY-SA 4.0 type (link to regulations).
We live in a world where artists' original works are very vulnerable, and it is all too easy to use them without their permission in any commercial or editorial context.
It is extremely important to establish a peaceful relationship of mutual respect between all professionals, including artists (in this case, paleoartists or scientific illustrators).
Anyone who uses another person's work without citing or mentioning the author, thus avoiding any kind of mention and/or acknowledgment, is committing an act of disrespect towards the effort and dedication of others, exploiting their skills and abilities.
I do not grant permission for the use of my works on this website or elsewhere in generative AI training datasets (images, videos, or text), image reimagining for any purpose (artistic or otherwise), or copying of the style of my artwork.
