THIS PAGE LISTS PARTICIPATIONS IN VARIOUS COMPETITIONS.

I have participated in several competitions during my career as a palaeoartist:

Every year I share one or more works with the Palaeontological Museum of Montevarchi, where an annual international palaeoart competition is held. In 2025, I was declared the winner in the “Projects” category after submitting a complex project on the reconstruction of the head of the carnivorous mammal Barbourofelis fricki. After the award ceremony, I gave a lecture on the project and the methodologies used.
In 2025, I also passed the selection process for works to be exhibited at the European palaeoart exhibition organised by the EAVP.
In 2020, I took second place in the Palaeoart competition organised by Anteo Piemonte Lombardia.

In 2025 edition of the Italian Paleoart Prize (Premio Italiano di Paleoarte) I won the "Project" category with the project "Head reconstruction of Barbourofelis fricki"."

Ichthyostega sp.

Participation

A specimen of Ichthyostega (Save-Soderbergh 1932) moves clumsily through the shallow muddy water of a river trying to catch specimens of Greenlandaspis mirabilis (Heintz, 1932). The fossil remains of these arthrodiri suggest a reddish coloration with a pale belly tending to yellow. The number of hand fingers of Ichthyostega was inferred following the work of Mednikov (2015).

A smilodon (Smilodon populator) is entering the water at an unknown in South America. Thanks to its stout elongated neck held aloft, it manages to get a good view of its surroundings. Sweetening the view of this predator are some sphingids dating back to the Pleistocene and found in South America (Palaeobiology Database).

In a nocturnal scenario, a specimen of Panthera gombaszoegensis has just felled an individual of the genus Leptobos. The scene does not take place in a dense forest; in fact, the so-called “Tuscan panther” was probably a solitary animal that was ill-suited to live in highly forested and/or wooded environment [O'Regan et al., 2002]. Such predation scenarios are highly likely given the coexistence of the two genera in the same territories of Pleistocene Italy and in the same temporal range (Argant et al., 2007; Masini et al., 2013; Palaeobiology Database) The mantle pattern typology was inferred using a machine learning validated by a dataset consisting of data collected from taxa today belonging to Felidae. The prediction was tested using phylogenetic inference (Werdelin and Olsson, 1997; Ortolani, 1999), placing P. gombaszoegensis as a sister taxon to Panthera tigris (Chatar et al., 2022).
